I showered in cold water, washing away the evidence of a fight. My temperature was hot, but I was still able to form goosebumps from the chillness of the water. I dunked my head underneath the showerhead when images of blood entered my mind. I shifted from under the water, opening my eyes and leaping back against the wall of the shower. For a split second, the water appeared to be blood pouring down upon me. I wiped my face with the palm of my hand, trying to clear my vision. I blinked a few times, making sure my eyes werenât deceiving me. For half a minute I stared at the showerhead, watching water flow out. There was no sense in staring any longer, so I turned off the water. My stomach turned in knots, and my head pounded. There was only confusion and dread.
When I stepped out, I dried off, facing the bathroom mirror.
I studied myself, hoping to find something physically different for me to identify. There was nothing. Only my saggy brown eyes and light brown complexion. My two braids still managed to look half decent. âGet a grip, Bonnie!â I told myself.
The only thing left on my skin from the fight were black and blue bruises. Iâd be healed completely in another hour. Dressed, I continued to replay Rikkiâs voice in my head. Iâd heard Maerelâs too. Somehow, theyâd been linked and able to reach me. It felt good hearing Rikkiâs voice. Iâd missed her. A tear fell and I let it stain my cheek.
Pacing in our small living space, I took in Rikkiâs words on how to find the changeling. If they were linked, why wouldnât the changeling just tell me where to find her? I frowned, knowing the changeling would not share such information, taking every opportunity to force me to go on a scavenger hunt.
My phone rang and I almost answered without checking the caller I.D. It was my mom. She would have to wait. I couldnât add her to the pile of problems Iâd have to face. Not now at least.
Rikki been gone the last few nights and my patience with Wes was slipping away. I was not a killer, but I feared the day I would become one. It seemed werewolves eventually killed one way or another.
I headed out of the shed to the main house after several minutes of pacing. The day wasnât over. The sky would darken in another hour, but I needed to start living like a creature in the night. I was a werewolf and could stay awake for days without issue if I wanted, as long as I wasnât badly weakened. Iâd regained my strength and needed to follow the breadcrumbs the changeling seemed to leave me.
And this time I would be ready for anything. I was stronger than I gave myself credit for and today proved it. This time, I would find my changeling.
